Changing Lives. Giving Hope.

Since 1974, the Down Syndrome Association of Houston has been providing lifelong education, support, and resources to individuals with Down syndrome, their families, and the communities in which they live.

We are here to help and support you throughout your journey as a Down syndrome parent, family member, or caregiver.

Our Story

DSAH Houston has been serving individuals with Down syndrome, their families, and the members of the Greater Houston community who serve them since 1974. Join us as we create a Greater Houston where individuals are included more and empowered to fulfill their personal goals and aspirations.

DSAH was founded in 1974 when there was very little information about Down syndrome and little to no support for family members. In response, a group of caring mothers decided that Houston needed an organization to support families with children with DS.

Adult Day Program

The Education for Life (E4L) is a day program that provides opportunities for individuals living with Down syndrome, ages 18 and up, to participate in activities and socialize with other individuals living with Down syndrome. In the summer months, E4L is open to adolescents, ages 16-17. E4L also provides learning opportunities to engage the mind while teaching skillsets to last a lifetime, encouraging self-advocacy and articulating their needs. The E4L program fosters self-sufficiency through participant-centered activities specifically designed for those living with Down syndrome.

Community Groups

DSAH is proud to offer its expertise regarding the impacts on individuals, families, and communities. We can help improve a school, company, or a non-profit organization’s understanding of intellectual disabilities while also providing much-needed information and support.

Education Workshops

These workshops provide individuals with Down syndrome more. Past sessions have included topics on IEP support, potty training, long-term planning, and technology supports.

As a mission-driven nonprofit, we pride ourselves on providing much-need, their family members, and the community that serves them access to high-quality, relevant information in the form of short 1-2 hour presentations. Topics vary widely but focus on empowering our stakeholders to value and include individual with Down syndrome, their family members, and the Greater Houston community.

Information & Referral Services

DSAH prides itself on being able to provide accurate information and timely referrals to any individual with Down syndrome, their family members, and the Greater Houston community.

New Parents Support

The purpose of the “Congratulations!” Program is to “congratulate” parents of newborn babies with Down syndrome. In a world where others often express sorrow for the birth of a child with Down syndrome, DSAH says with pride, reassurance, and passion, “Congratulations!”

Youth & Family Socials

CLUB 21

Club 21 is a social group for individuals ages 13+. Held bimonthly, social events include game night, bowling, dances, and more. This is a chance for parents to have a little “time off” while their child socializes.

Coffee & Conversation and PG-13

Coffee and Conversation is a time for parents of children with  under 5 to get together and discuss what is going on in their child’s life and share information with other parents.

PG-13 is for parents of children, ages 6-13, to get together and discuss what is going on in their child’s life and share information with other parents.
