Dyslexia Therapy
According to the International Dyslexia Association 15 to 20% of the population shows symptoms of dyslexia, which are difficulties with accurate or fluent word recognition and poor spelling or decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is unexpected in relation to other intellectual abilities.
Structured literacy is an effective intervention for students with dyslexia
Students with dyslexia are likely to struggle with many aspects of academic learning and benefit from systematic, explicit, instruction in reading, writing, and language in a method called structured literacy.
The components of structured literacy include:
- Phonemic awareness
- Phonics
- Orthography
- Morphology
- Syntax
- Semantics
These components are delivered explicitly in a systematic way and is very interactive between teacher and student. Immediate feedback on errors and diagnostic instruction is central to the delivery of instruction.
Evidence is strong that most students learn to read better with structured teaching of basic language skills, and that the components and methods of structured literacy are critical for students with reading disabilities including dyslexia.
